Chicken Mystery

 The chickens at the local elementary school are a very handsome lot:

But I noticed something odd about the black-and-white ones recently:

They all have a dab of iridescent blue on their backs:

Is this a genetic fluke? An art project that got out of hand? Or a way of ID'ing runaway chickens, should they choose to escape into the neighborhood?

The feathered ladies may know, but they aren't talking.
