Free Plants

A few months back, a neighbor of mine thinned out her garden. In the process, she put some unwanted plants out at the curb. She could have just thrown the leavings into our city-provided green bins. Instead, she set a sign out, "Free Plants," and gave the neighbors a crack at 'em.

Most of the plants looked pretty crummy, but I was intrigued by one--a succulent of some sort, with fat leaves. It kind of looked like a chubby green rose:

I'm not normally attracted to succulents. They are too exotic, bizarre, and spiky to be welcome in my garden. But this little plant was different. And, I figured, I had nothing to lose by trying it out to see if it would grow.

So I took it home, plopped it in some dirt, and kept it watered.

The plant is thriving! It seems to have totally made itself at home in my potted herb garden. It's so happy, I've taken to calling the plant the "Happy Little Dude."

Yeah, I anthropomorphize from time to time.

Whatevs.

I don't think I'll ever become a Super Succulent Fan, but this guy is welcome.

The HLD seems to be fine with pugs, too.

  1. I do believe HDL is a jade plant -- one of my two favorite succulents (the other being Hens and Chickens).
